Hagenbeck Zoo is one of Hamburg's most famous attractions and looks back on a history of over 100 years. Founded by Carl Hagenbeck, it is regarded as a pioneer of modern animal husbandry, as it already favoured open-air enclosures without bars at an early stage. Today, the zoo combines nature, education and adventure in a unique way and delights numerous visitors every year.
At Hagenbeck Zoo, guests can discover over 1,850 animals from all over the world - from elephants, giraffes and tigers to rare reptiles and fascinating underwater worlds in the tropical aquarium. The large outdoor enclosures make it possible to observe the animals in their natural habitats. The elephant feeding is particularly popular and makes the visit an unforgettable experience.
In addition to the classic animal enclosures, there is a petting enclosure with goats and sheep, adventure playgrounds for children and numerous events such as guided tours, shows and holiday programmes.
Another highlight is the tropical aquarium, which is divided into various themed worlds. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the fascinating world of crocodiles, sharks, snakes, lizards and colourful fish. With its variety of animal species and detailed backdrops, it is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
Several restaurants, cafés and snack bars in the zoo cater for your physical well-being. Whether it's a snack between meals, an ice cream in summer or a hot lunch with a view of the animal enclosures, there's something for everyone. Picnic areas are also available.
Animal park: open daily from 9:00 am (closing times vary depending on the season, usually between 4:30 and 6:00 pm)
Tropical Aquarium: open daily from 9:00 am (closing times also vary depending on the season)
Both facilities are also open on Sundays and public holidays.
