The main church of St. Katharinen is one of the oldest churches in Hamburg and has shaped the skyline of the Hanseatic city for over 770 years. First documented in 1250, it is located near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Speicherstadt – nestled between the city center, HafenCity, the art mile, and the Elbphilharmonie. St. Katharinen sees itself as a place of faith, music, culture, and as a space for encounters, prayer, and conversation.
The church was heavily damaged during World War II, externally rebuilt between 1950 and 1956, and comprehensively renovated in 2012. Its 116-meter-high tower with its distinctive dome is a landmark of the city. A special highlight is the Baroque organ: originally built in the 17th century, it was considered one of the most beautiful organs of the Hanseatic Baroque. After its destruction in 1943, it was faithfully reconstructed between 2009 and 2013.
The namesake, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, represents wisdom, courage, and beauty – values that shape the self-understanding of the Evangelical-Lutheran community. Today, St. Katharinen acts as a link between the old city center and the new HafenCity and is a place where church life, culture, music, and civil society engagement come together.
The church is generally open during the day, but exact times may vary depending on events and worship services.
