Bunker Feldstraße – Between Concrete, History, and Urban Garden

The Bunker Feldstraße in the Hamburg district of St. Pauli is anything but an ordinary building. Originally constructed as a flak tower during World War II, it was intended to fend off air raids while providing shelter for the civilian population. Today, you can find restaurants, a hotel, event spaces, and a view of Hamburg that you won’t find anywhere else. Its new name: Grüne Bunker.

What makes the Bunker Feldstraße so special?

For decades, the bunker stood as a gray block in the middle of Heiligengeistfeld, impervious and unused – yet it was never forgotten. Since the 1990s, the interior has transformed into a cultural breeding ground. Clubs, studios, and agencies moved in, including the now internationally known Uebel & Gefahrlich. With an addition starting in 2019, the bunker gained five new floors and a spiral-shaped, green ramp leading to an accessible rooftop garden.

Its uniqueness lies in the radical connection between history and future. The repurposing of this former war monument into a vibrant place for everyone is unprecedented in Germany.

The spiral ascent along the outer wall makes the visit a small urban adventure. You walk along the "mountain path," accompanied by thousands of plants, until reaching the roof. Once at the top: 1,400 square meters of garden, a wide view over the city, and tranquility amidst the noise. The rooftop garden is freely accessible, featuring seating, shady corners, picnic spots, and regularly scheduled small events.

Inside, you’ll find the Georg-Elser Hall, a new multifunctional arena for concerts, readings, or sports – with space for over 2,000 people. Additionally, the hotel "Reverb by Hard Rock" invites overnight guests with its rooftop terrace, music playlists, and smart design. Culinary options include restaurants like KARO & PAUL or the Constant Grind bar.

The historical context is not overlooked either: a memorial room on the ground floor commemorates the darker chapters of the site. Thus, the bunker connects the past, present, and future in close quarters – right in the middle of one of Hamburg’s most vibrant neighborhoods, surrounded by the Karoviertel, Millerntor Stadium, and the Dom grounds.

Insider Tip: In the early morning, you can enjoy the mountain path almost entirely to yourself – at sunrise and amidst birdsong, Hamburg reveals its quietest side.
